The Year is an imaginary line in the sand that separates one business year from the next. To move forward and make space for a bright future we need to complete and clear out the year that’s just finished. Otherwise one year rolls into the next, the distinctions and subtleties are lost and we get a sense of life somehow crowding in on us.

This ‘completion’ is a 3-part process call a “Reflection”.

A Reflection begins by listing out all of your ACHIEVEMENTS (both business and personal) for the year just past. When you look back at each month or quarter, what were the highlights, successes, milestones, the goals you met, the things you achieved? These ACHIEVEMENTS provide the real foundation blocks for your future success and the forward momentum to build on. Taking the time out to acknowledge your achievements is a very powerful tool. Plan to celebrate these with the people who helped you get there, if you have not already done that.

Next, look back on the failures, disappointments and low points throughout the year, the times when things did not work out as you’d planned. From these events and experiences list your LEARNINGS. A failure is really only ever a failure if you miss the great learning opportunity that always goes with it. Take the time to reflect on these times, work out how you got the result you got. This is the insight – the chance to learn from your mistakes; turn them in to the gift that they really are.

The third and final part of the “Reflection” process is to list out your INTENTIONS for the coming year. What specifically are your “Intentions” for the 12 months ahead…the things, events, experiences, and outcomes you’d like to become a reality? Intentions are separate from specific measurable goals; they define the framework within which you’ll set specific goals. This is a great process to complete as a family as well, so always make sure that you have a balance of personal and business intentions.

This reflection is best done after a break from the routine of your work. After a week or 10 days of different activity, freshair and exercise. It is a powerful tool that sets you up for more detailed planning when you get back to the office.

If you would like help with completing your reflection process phone me on 64 9 412 9485.

Because I consider an ascent a key tool for success I practice the Ascent process on a weekly basis throughout the year as well as completing a major annual one. If you’d like to know more about this or some coaching through your Ascent just give me a call on 64 9 412 9485.
